Welcome to the Sunday Subtext, a (mostly) weekly event wherein I share random stuff I’ve been reading in the past week (or so) which may (or may not!) have informed my writing.
This week I have not been reading or doing much of anything, seeing it has been what I now am referring to as bear time. It’s the week where I fall off almost every single possible wagon, and only by the grace of coffee am I able to do so much as make it through a work day.
I didn’t even do yoga at all. But I did read that one blog post this morning, so that’s something.
Otherwise, I’ve been reading How to Disagree Without Being Disagreeable: Getting Your Point Across with the Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense which is incredible. In it, the author discusses how our whole society has adapted a “combat” metaphor for how we use language, and it results in all kinds of emotional harm, misunderstandings and other seriously bad things. And once you read that, you will start seeing it everywhere.
I also really like her concept that as a listener in a conversation, it’s your job to accept that what the other person says is true and then to figure out what it’s true of. Another piece of the puzzle in my quest to be less defensive.
In other behind-the-scenes news, I’m obsessed with the FLOOP because it just makes everything in life better, even when I’m not actually there.
Additional news on major upcoming life stuff to be revealed soon. Or possibly to my email list first. So you might want to get on that.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend…. I’m off to do my taxes.
